VANS – Quality from the Start VANS was founded in 1966 in California, specifically in Anaheim, under the name "Van Doren Rubber Company." VANS specialized in making shoes with vulcanized soles, as there were only three manufacturers offering this type of shoe at the time. The founders, Paul Van Doren, James Van Doren, Gordon Lee, and Serge D’Elia, had the brilliant idea of combining manufacturing and sales under one roof – the first VANS store was born. The initial models didn't have names, only numbers, like the #44, also known as the "Authentic Deck Shoe." Today, this is a true classic: the VANS Authentic. In the early days, customers could even bring their own fabrics to the VANS store to create custom shoes. The goal was to use thicker soles, stronger threads, and more durable materials than the competition. "My dad’s whole philosophy was to make shoes like Sherman Tanks; they were really built tough and you’d have to tell your friends about it," said Steve Van Doren, son of founder Paul Van Doren. It’s no surprise that this quickly caught on among skateboarders. By the early 70s, VANS and skateboarding became inextricably linked! In 1975, as more skaters and BMX riders became VANS customers, the company introduced a development of the Authentic tailored to the specific needs of skaters: the VANS Era. Even skate icon Stacy Peralta of the legendary Dogtown Boys, who co-designed the shoe, was sponsored by VANS and featured in their advertisements wearing the Era. Other classics followed, such as the VANS Slip-On, the VANS Old School, the high-top VANS Sk8-Hi, and the VANS Half Cab. By the late 70s, the first skateparks were built, skateboarding became a global phenomenon, and VANS grew along with it.
