The first real functional basketball shoe was brought to market by Converse as early as 1917, but the sneakers did not become real "Chucks" until a few years later. Thanks to intense promotion by Converse employee and basketball player, Chuck Taylor, the canvas sneakers then got their famous round patch in 1923.
